Interesting item in Join Together roundup this morning. Reuters reports that heavy social drinkers who took naltrexone were more likely to cut down on their smoking as well as drinking, according to researchers from the University of Chicago.

This is just a hunch on my part, but It seems to me that drinking and pot smoking is more widespread at an earlier age than previously and that it's extremely important to engage parents at this age group (before they become jaded and/or defensive).…

hi thom, i am a psychotherapist with a license in addictions as well. The one thing i know is that families need to be educated by hospitals, clinics or addiction specialists on the cycle of addiction and the fact that the family gets as sick of sicker than the addict. The mental health message is so important as many of our adolescents and adult addicts suffer from untreated mental illness; therefore, they mask their feelings with drugs. If we got some funds allocated for addiction, i would like to see more treatment centers for adolescents and more family work with parents and siblings.

Hi Thom, i opened my email today and found an invitation to join this website. I congratulate you for starting such a positive way for all sick and suffering people affected by drugs to speak. I am a member of Learn2Cope in Salem, MA. I know joanne peterson well and talk with her often. My son, Casey, died at the end of July (08) from an accidental drug overdose. He struggled for ten years with addiction while we tried to help. He was only 24 years old when he died. I will try to spread the good news that there is a lot of recovery out there and i want to be part of the solution. thanks. kerry
